DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Dodge City Middle School teacher Erin Schaffer was one of six teachers in North America selected by Cargill to attend a weeklong environmental training program at Keystone Science Center in Colorado. Following the Center’s Key Issues Institute, Schaffer will partner with employees from Cargill Meat Solutions to develop hands-on environmental-education experiences for her students.

“The knowledge and experience Ms. Schaffer will bring back from this institute will provide a tremendous learning opportunity for our students,” said Pamela Algrim, assistant principal of the school. “We appreciate Cargill’s support of youth education.”

Key Issues is a national teacher-training institute that provides educators with the process and skills to investigate current environmental issues with their students. The $3,000 Cargill scholarship will provide for Schaffer’s transportation, lodging, meals, materials and instruction at the summer session. Cargill has supported the program since 1993, sending more than 60 teachers through the institute.

“Keystone’s program helps us teach the next generation the importance of protecting our natural resources,” said Dan Schnitker, general manager of Cargill Meat Solutions. “Cargill is pleased to support this development opportunity for Erin, and we look forward to working with her and her students to enrich our community.”
