Scholarship honors memory of CIA Professor, Viktor Baumann, C.H.E.

Milwaukee, Wis./Hyde Park, NY - June 17, 2003 - Cargill Foodservice Meat Solutions, Cargill Salt and Sunny Fresh Foods, a Cargill foods company, surprised staff and administrators of The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) on Tuesday, June 17 with the presentation of the first CIA Cargill-Diversity Scholarship program. The announcement was made by Matt Wineinger, Vice President, Cargill Meat Solutions during graduation ceremonies for the first graduating class of the CIA Certified Culinary Sales Professional program.

The scholarship honors the memory of Chef Viktor Baumann, CIA Professor in Culinary Arts. Baumann was one of two instructors involved in the initial development of the Certified Culinary Sales Program over the last year. Baumann, who'd taught at the CIA since 1985 died unexpectedly earlier this year.

"This program will help create new opportunities for future culinary professionals much like Chef Baumann created learning opportunities for Cargill's managers," said Wineinger. "This is a way Cargill can let others share in the great learning experiences we've had through the CIA certification program."

The $75,000 scholarship program will award $5,000 scholarships to minority students participating in the CIA's Bachelor of Arts programs during the next three years. Students receiving the scholarship also will be singled out for special attention from Cargill, including site visits and tours of some of the company's numerous foodservice operations to help illustrate how suppliers, such as Cargill, support the foodservice industry.
